Wuendy was a single mother doing her best to finish her senior year at the local alternative high school. She did not see herself going to 2 or 4-year college programs and desired to make good money to be able to provide for herself and her child after graduation.
Wuendy’s high school counselor referred Wuendy to Employment Services of Weld County to receive any assistance open to her through DHS and to find employment with the added barrier of being a single mother. Wuendy was introduced to a Youth Employment and Training Programs Case Manager that went over all the programs Wuendy could benefit from. To address employment, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) seemed to be the best fit to help Wuendy stay on track to graduate and transition her into the workforce.
With guidance from her case manager, Wuendy ended up graduating high school early. This also happened to be the same week her Dental Assistant training started, which was a strategic decision so Wuendy could focus on one thing at a time and not be spread too thin, leaving quality time available for her child. Wuendy passed her training at the end of July and immediately started working for a local Dental Office through a paid work experience. Wuendy completed her allotted hours for the work experience portion of the program and has been offered a permanent position at the same dental office where she interned!
