College is not the only path to success, and Sean is a great example of this. Sean enrolled into the WIOA Young Adult program in the beginning of 2022 and expressed a strong interest in Construction. However, Sean had to overcome several barriers before and during the program. Coming into the program, Sean identified as being skills deficient and shared that he did not graduate high school.
After enrolling into the program, Sean got to work and was able to get his
GED within a couple months of being enrolled. To address some of the soft skills Sean needed, the Pikes Peak Workforce Center provided a mandatory three-day training based off the Bring Your A Game Program. Sean showed up every day by taking the bus and completed all class requirements. He successfully passed the final exam with flying colors and was able to move into the next steps of his Individual Service Strategy. His case manager, Edwin, knew the perfect pre-apprenticeship program and enrolled Sean into Build Strong Academy. This pre-apprenticeship focuses on real-world, hands-on training and students acquire mentorship from
industry experts.
Sean successfully graduated from the pre-apprenticeship program with new skills and began working with Habitat for Humanity to gain real world experience. Job Coach Michael Walton placed Sean into this paid internship and provided guidance and evaluations on a monthly basis to ensure success. All of Sean's managers and coworkers praised Sean for his knowledge on tools and materials. They also spoke highly of his soft skills and how much of a hard worker he is. Toward the end of Sean's internship, he was offered a permanent position with the company and now is working full-time!
