Joseline was referred to the workforce center by her School to Work Alliance Program (SWAP) coordinator, as she had completed High School two months prior and was seeking employment. Joseline found school difficult due to a lack of support to assist with her hearing impairment and was not interested in going to a community college as a result.
A Youth Employment and Training Programs Case Manager met with Joseline who enrolled her in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) youth program and assigned assessments to discover what type of careers she may be interested in. This included TABE and Workplace Reediness Credential testing. Joseline did participate in remediation to successfully earn the WRC. She was also provided access to several videos in the careers the interest profiler assessment matched her to. Joseline was intrigued by the medical field and she explored entry-level jobs and training programs during a one-on-one meeting with her case manager.
Joseline decided to pursue a career in Dental Assisting. WIOA funds assisted Joseline with an 8-week training, including the purchase of scrubs. This 8-week training program met Joseline’s education needs and at the same time set her up for a job immediately after completion of her training. Joseline now works for a local pediatric dental office and receives minimal supports from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), SWAP, and ESWC to maintain her career.
