Steven, a Plant Manager at Acme Brick Company, was laid off after 35 years when the plant closed. He decided to pursue a career change to a high-demand industry and was looking to obtain a Commercial Drivers License, Class A (CDL – A). His wife, also having lost her job in 2016, had them both cashing in their 401Ks to help make ends meet.
Steven was enrolled into the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) at Employment Services of Weld County (ESWC) after being on the waiting list for about two months. While he was waiting, he independently obtained his Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical and Learner's Permit in preparation for the anticipated training. Once enrolled in the WIOA Dislocated Worker program, Steven’s case manager assigned him a comprehensive assessment, Prove It! Skill Certification for basic computer literacy, and soft skills assessments. Steven was provided a list of CDL Training Schools from the Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL) for him to research and determine who would best meet his training needs. The ESWC Training Committee approved the training with provider Careers World Wide. He also received resume preparation assistance and gas vouchers to assist him in attending his occupational skills training for the CDL.
Steven successfully completed his training with Careers World-Wide. He applied for multiple positions with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Weld County, and various surrounding cities and successfully gained employment with the City of Evans.
