Darrell, in his mid-60s, was laid off from his job as a Drill Operator in August 2020, due to COVID and lack of work. He regained employment for a few months and again due to lack of work, he was laid off. During this time, Darrell gained full custody of his two small grandchildren and he knew that he would have to make a lot of changes, including his career, to become stable in a high-demand occupation to build a foundation to provide for himself and his family.
Workforce Solution
Darrell was enrolled into the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Dislocated Worker and RecoverCO Programs, where he decided to obtain his Commercial Driver’s License, Class A (CDLE-A). Darrell was enrolled with Careers World-Wide, from the Eligible Training Providers List (ETPL), for their three-week training of 170-hour CDL A Tractor-Trailer Training beginning April 26, 2021.
Outcomes & Benefits
May 14, 2021, Darrell successfully completed his CDL A Training with Careers World-Wide. Due to the impacts of COVID, he had to wait until June for an appointment with the DMV to apply for the license and endorsements, including HAZMAT. Darrell met with his Case Manager to do an extensive job search and left his appointment with over 13 different job opportunities to apply for. Darrell obtained multiple endorsements, doubles, triples, and tankers along with his HAZMAT. He successfully gained employment in July with KR Swerdfeger as a Truck Driver/Operator with a starting wage of $31.05 per hour and full benefits. Darrell is very grateful for the services provided to him and this great opportunity for a new career.
