- New Mexico was the sixteenth fastest growing state in the country between 2000-2008; population 1.984 million based on 2008 Census estimates
- New Mexico has a high proportion (10.9%) of residents with a graduate or professional degree due in part to the national labs, technical universities and high-tech industry
- The majority of jobs in New Mexico are either in the service providing industries or the government sector. The proportion of government jobs is higher primarily because of the presence of two national defense laboratories and three large Air Force bases.
