Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Arkansas Workforce Center - Lewisville
Cody came to the Youth Program at the Arkansas Workforce Center in Lewisville as a young man with a criminal record. Testing showed him to be deficient in the basic skills of reading and problem solving. Cody needed help from tutors and a strong role model to show him the correct path to follow.
Workforce Solution
Through the Center, Cody was provided tutoring to increase his skill levels and participated in work readiness training so that he could obtain a job placement. Interest assessments showed him to have a high interest in working with animals, so after completing work-readiness training, Cody was placed in a job at the Barn Feed and Farm Supply Store in Stamps, Arkansas. His supervisor served as a mentor, guiding him to be a good worker and encouraging Cody to do better in school. Cody also participated in other youth activities sponsored by the Center.
Outcomes & Benefits
Cody has now graduated from high school, and he tested appropriately in reading and math on the ABLE test. Cody shared that "he has certainly come a long way."
Cody has overcome his low income status and his basic skills deficient barrier. His troubled past is behind him and he has a clean slate and a new start. He moved out of his mother's house and began living independently. Because of Cody's success in the youth program, he has a better respect for his own life and the lives of others.
