A recent college graduate gains her first work experience through the summer youth program and moves on to full time employment.

Rachel was a recent college graduate with no formal work experience. She was searching for a job in communications, a competitive field, and was constantly overlooked in favor of more qualified, experience candidates. She needed some practical work experience to boost her employability.

Workforce Solution

Fortunately for Rachel, she was able to participate in Mobile Works’ Summer Youth Program provided with funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This program allowed Rachel to earn valuable job experience and get paid.

Rachel wrote the following in a letter to Mobile Works: “I wanted to share my experience this summer with the Mobile Works’ Summer Youth Program. I am so blessed to have been able to participate in this program. I worked with the Communications Department at the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and was able to use the skills I learned in college in a workplace environment. "

Outcomes & Benefits

The letter continued: “Because of this program and my experience this summer, I feel confident that I am ready to transition from college into the workplace. Thanks so much for this opportunity."

Rachel included her paid work experience obtained through the Youth Summer Employment program on her resume, which helped her catch the attention of a local non-profit. Rachel was hired to work in their communications department. “I feel very lucky," Rachel said. "Thank you for everything."
