Xtra Airways moved operations from Elko, Nevada to Boise, Idaho. In business for 20+ years, Xtra operates four Boeing 737 400-passenger aircraft around the world. With more than 150 worldwide employees, 35 of whom reside in Boise, Xtra had an opening for a safety director and wanted qualified, local candidates. Xtra president and CEO Lisa Dunn was in the process of setting up interviews with three candidates from out of state and was concerned about the high costs of relocation.
Workforce Solution
After corresponding with Xtra President Lisa Dunn for more than a year, Alisa Bondurant with the Idaho Department of Labor's business services staff finally had a chance to learn about the company's needs and the specifics of the safety director position. She introduced Dunn to Thomas Glick, a member of the DOL's Professional Networking Group. Glick had a strong background in aviation safety. Dunn was also introduced to eJobs, the DOL's online job listing service, and she was encouraged to post future job openings with the Idaho Department of Labor so thousands of local job seekers could view the postings and if they wished, apply.
Outcomes & Benefits
In early February, 2011, Lisa and the Xtra operations manager interviewed Tom Glick and offered him the safety position on the spot. On Monday, Feb. 14, Tom Glick accepted the job, signed paperwork and started work on Wednesday, February 16.
On February 24, Xtra Airways used the Idaho eJobs system for the first time and posted a second listing for a manager of purchasing and stores. She also called Bondurant for candidate recommendations, proving that a new partnership has been forged.
