Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Department of Workforce Services, Davis County

Workforce Challenge

"Joe"* had his GED and the bulk of his work experience was in temporary work. He was trying to further his education and was already enrolled in the machine tool program at Davis Applied Technology College (DATC) when he came into the Davis County Workforce Services office. His Pell grant did not cover all his tuition and supplies, and he was in danger of dropping out because of financial difficulties.

Workforce Solution

Davis Workforce Services helped Joe qualify for WIA funding that would cover the gap in tuition and supplies. Joe regularly attended class and kept his performance high, informing his WIA counselor of his progress along the way. The funding allowed him to enroll full time, and he was able to finish the coursework more quickly and purchase the tools he would need as a technician.

Outcomes & Benefits

Within a year, he finished his certification and obtained full time employment within a couple of weeks completion. Joe is now able to be self-sufficient and provide for his family. He is now able to afford GED classes for his wife so she can further her education and obtain employment too.
