Workforce Challenge
Julia is a 19-year-old single mother of a 1-year-old son. She was very interested in obtaining full-time summer employment through the youth Work Experience program.
Workforce Solution
Julia was placed at the Wheeler Farms Candy Company and worked in the retail store where she obtained work experience in cashiering and customer service by helping the customers in the store. This experience also allowed her to learn skills in getting products ready to ship and receiving products for the store.
Trina and Charlie Wheeler also have a property management business and involved Julia in this by introducing her to home owners and renters and involving her in cleaning the properties and getting them ready to rent again. She was even involved in filing a police report when one of the properties was broken into. For both businesses, Julia performed office work which allowed her to learn additional skills.
Finally, Trina Wheeler has a catering business, and Julia became involved with all aspects of this business, from cooking and serving to packing up and cleaning up.
Outcomes & Benefits
The opportunity to be involved in not one, but three, businesses through her Work Experience program boosted Julia's confidence as well as her resume. Although the Work Experience placement has ended, she is now working towards her GED.
