New York - Sclafani Petroleum

Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Westchester/Putnam Workforce Investment Board

Workforce Challenge

Sclafani Petroleum wanted to to expand its operations by adding services in home energy auditing, but couldn't afford to upgrade the skills of its existing employees to help them learn the new procedures necessary to carry out the work. The company approached the Westchester/Putnam Workforce Investment Board for assistance.

Workforce Solution

Through the WPWIB, eight Sclafani Petroleum employees participated in a two-week training class on energy auditing and providing improvement upgrades to homeowners. The WIB subsidized about 80 percent of the class costs, while Sclafani Petroleum paid for equipment and books. Plans are for company employees to take two more classes during the summer of 2011.

Outcomes & Benefits

According to Maureen Sclafani, co-owner of Sclafani Petroleum, the solution provided by the WPWIB was very positive for her company. It allowed her small business to expand its knowledge base, opening up new horizons for expansion in the future.
