Workforce Innovation Submitted By: Lancaster County Workforce Investment Board
Community Challenge/Problem
Three years ago, human resource professionals from the RR Donnelley Company approached the PA CareerLink and the Lancaster County Workforce Investment Board about the need to replace their temporary workforce with a better prepared and more qualified workforce as a way of growing productivity by stabilizing turnover.
Board Solution/Innovation
The planning group decided to build on the Ready2Work program of the PA CareerLink by offering the HOT (hands-on training) Lab and Printing 101 which mimics the orientation that new hires at Donnelley get. The eight-week program covers basic machine maintenance as well as basic printing processes and techniques. Company trainers provided the curriculum and trained instructors from the local technical college to teach it.
In an extraordinary step by a corporate champion, the RR Donnelley Foundation provided funding to purchase equipment while the machine shops of local Donnelley plants provided simulators to equip a lab in the PA CareerLink. The Foundation also provided funding to cover part of the cost of the training program.
Outcomes & Results
Graduates of the program have been and continue to be hired by the company. They have a very good retention rate and a good gold collar job. The company has developed an alternative to using staffing services and is well on the way to meeting its goal of a better quality workforce.
