Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Northwest Tennessee Workforce Board
Workforce Challenge
Tracy Taylor from McKenzie, TN was laid off from an automotive systems manufacturer in the summer of 2009 due to cut backs in the company. Tracy had quit high school at the age of 15 and after working in a factory for 24 years, she did not have the skills she needed to find sustainable employment. For much of her adult life, Tracy had helped care for her terminally ill brother. He encouraged her to become a nurse.
Workforce Solution
Tracy first went to the local Tennessee Career Center partner's Adult Education office to seek assistance in getting her GED. After completing her GED, Tracy cared for her brother until he passed away due to complications from his illness. At that point, Tracy decided to follow her brother's advice and try to become a nurse. She worked with a Workforce Investment Act Career Advisor and was awarded a Need-Based Scholarship to help pay her tuition and fees at the Tennessee Technology Center in Paris, TN. She began training as a Licensed Practical Nurse in September 2011.
Outcomes & Benefits
Tracy completed her training and obtained her State License in September 2012 to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She told her WIA Career Advisor that she enjoyed taking care of the sick, but she never would have had the opportunity to become a nurse without WIA assistance. Tracy is now working as an LPN at a Nursing Facility and hopes to continue moving forward in the nursing field.
