Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Oahu Worklinks City and County of Honolulu
Workforce Challenge
Sheree-Lynn had been a flight attendant with Aloha Airlines for 22 years. When the company abruptly shut down in March 2008, like many employees, she was devastated and did not know what else she could do and what the future would hold for her.
Workforce Solution
Sheree-Lynn received career planning and counseling services from Oahu WorkLinks. After researching the labor market, she realized that she needed to update her computer skills to be marketable. With encouragement from her Oahu WorkLinks Employment Consultant and tuition assistance from a National Emergency Grant, she went back to finish school at Leeward Community College and received a Certificate in Administration & Technology.
Sheree-Lynn completed the job search workshops offered by Oahu WorkLinks and successfully obtained a job with a non-profit organization, Ka Pa'alana Traveling Preschool Homeless Family Education Program, as a parent educator for homeless families living in emergency or transitional shelters.
Outcomes & Benefits
Sheree-Lynn is still employed as a parent educator for homeless families after four and half years. She loves her job and works closely with the Waianae Oahu WorkLinks, which is located next to a transitional shelter, to provide job search and placement assistance to unemployed homeless individuals. She is a great model for her clients and inspires them with confidence, a confidence which she said Oahu WorkLinks helped her build when she went through the period of fear, anxiety and unemployment.
