Meet Mr. G

West Virginia - Meet Mr. G

Workforce Success Story Submitted By: WIB MOV

Workforce Challenge

When the Jackson County, West Virginia Alcan plant experienced a layoff of production workers, Mr. G was one of many workers affected. Many had the job barrier of no prior work history other than the plant, some had no transferable skills that were marketable in the region at the time, while still others were faced with seeking employment at an advanced age. For Mr. G, his job barrier included the fact that he had no high school diploma or GED.

Workforce Solution

After being informed of the opportunities available for him through WIA, Mr. G visited the Workforce WV Center in Ripley. After meeting with TAA Coordinator, D. Addis, Mr. G mapped out a plan for success and embarked on a training journey utilizing WIA/TAA funding. The first step was to enroll in ABE classes as a collaborative effort with RESA V and the school system and to obtain his GED. Next he began Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) training. And lastly he enrolled in training for his Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

Outcomes & Benefits

Just a few short months after entering the doors of Workforce WV Mr. G reached his ultimate goal. On November 27, 2010, Mr. G became a professional truck driver when he accepted a full-time position driving for TMC Technologies.
