Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Employment Services of Weld County
Workforce Challenge
Michelle started doing labor work after high school. She then chose landscaping as her career because she enjoyed the outdoors. As time went on her body was not able to do the things she used to do and she lost her job. This is when she came to get assistance from Human Services and applied for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
Workforce Solution
Her case manager discussed a career change due to her aging body. She agreed that an inside and not so physically demanding job would be nice. However, she was not as familiar with computers as she would like to be. Her case manager placed her in a Subsidized Training and Employment Program (STEP) work-experience position at the Weld Food Bank, where she checked people in, learned more computer skills, and gained the experience that she wanted and needed.
Outcomes & Benefits
Michelle liked working at the food bank so much and loved helping people that she said it was her calling. She then applied for a fulltime permanent position and got it. She is now completing an On-the-Job Training at the food bank. Through all the struggles she went through, she was still able to find her forever job through Employment Services and is very grateful for this.
