Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Northwest Tennessee Workforce Board
Workforce Challenge
Lisa was a single parent struggling to make ends meet when she enrolled in Jackson State Community College to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. Lisa had a high school diploma, but had dropped out of college 10 years previously due to financial constraints. She struggled to find sustainable work and survived on part-time jobs and food stamps.
Workforce Solution
Lisa secured a WIA Needs-Based Scholarship from the Tennessee Career Center so that she could pursue her RN degree at Jackson State Community College. Being unemployed at the time and on food stamps, she was eligible for tuition assistance and a transportation stipend to help with the high cost of traveling back and forth to class.
Outcomes & Benefits
Despite many hardships, Lisa graduated and became a registered nurse in Tennessee. She is actively employed as an RN in a local hospital. Congratulations for your perseverance Lisa!
