Meet Katie

Colorado - Meet Katie

Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Pikes Peak Workforce Center

Workforce Challenge

Katie came to Pikes Peak Workforce Center after being referred from Teller County DHS through the CW STEP program. Katie is a single mother who relocated to Colorado and was having difficulty finding enough work to make ends meet. Katie expressed a passion for working with hard to serve populations, and had previously worked with at-risk teens in another state.

Workforce Solution

Though she possessed a part-time job, she was underemployed and relied on assistance to get her through. When meeting with her case manager Jen McKee, Katie expressed interest in working with individuals struggling with addiction. Jen McKee referred Katie to job coach, Carrie Sigmon who assisted her with an internship at an organization that helps justice-involved individuals find employment. Katie was initially placed in the position of Program Assistant from September 2019 to January 2020.

Outcomes & Benefits

Her duties included greeting clients, answering phones, calling clients to remind them of appointments, and assisting with resume building and mock interviewing. Due to Katie’s success on the job, her internship was extended from January to March 2020. Additionally, she received a pay increase. The employer relayed their intention to hire Katie at the conclusion of her internship. This second placement focused on her learning additional administrative tasks and training her to use SalesForce. Katie also began learning some of the processes of case management.
She has received only positive reviews of her work ethic and is now ready to find full-time employment. The agency did not receive the funds they had anticipated due to Covid-19; however, they encourage Katie to apply for future positions that become available.
