Meet John

Colorado - Meet John

Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Arapahoe/Douglas Works!

Workforce Challenge

John was laid off from his job of 30 years in the medical field and was having a hard time finding employment. Client stated during our first meeting that he would need additional education to find a job on his field. He stated he didn't want to spend years in school, instead he wanted a career change. John stated that he wasn't sure what field to pursue that would be short in training. Client's barriers were identified as needing additional education, improving employability skills, lack of supportive resources, and transportation.

Workforce Solution

The following are steps taken by client and his Workforce Specialist (WFS) to overcome challenges:
1. WFS provided client with information to obtain career assessments to identify potential career paths. The resources provided to client included information on O*Net for career assessments (and how to use the assessments), and Colorado's List of Training Providers.
2. Client decided that he would like obtaining his CDL Class A license as that would provide him with a job that is stable, and provides income that would allow for self-sufficiency.
3. Client was referred by WFS to ADW!'s Employability Skills workshops, including resume and interview workshops.
4. Transportation assistance in the form of gas vouchers.
5. Once client identified his career goals, we worked together in creating an education plan. Client was provided with a Training Request Package and contact information for ADW!'s TABE Instructor.
6. EF provided the education and training funds for client to complete the Class A CDL License training. WFS collaborated with the training provider to obtain required documentation needed for funding to be provided to client.

Outcomes & Benefits

1. John obtained his Class A CDL License after completing his training.
2. Client was provided with transportation assistance to be able to go to interviews.
3. John obtained full-time employment as a CDL Truck Driver making $20 hours plus over time, and with full benefits.
4. EF will be providing client with assistance in paying for supplies he needs for work: Truck Driver GPS, boots, and gloves. In addition, client was provided with transportation assistance until his first paycheck.
