Workforce Challenge
In September 2009, due to a downturn in the economy, Hilda was laid-off from her job at Family Residences as an Administrative Assistant earning $12.00 per hour.
Workforce Solution
Hilda was anxious to get back to work so she came to the Queens Workforce1 Career Center in November 2009 to leverage their job search services. A Workforce1 Career Advisor assessed her job readiness and scheduled her for an Advanced Resume Workshop where she learned how to better market her skills and experience to prospective employers.
In early 2010, Hilda met with a Workforce1 Account Manager for job matching. The Account Manager referred her to FCI Management Consultants for a part-time position as an Administrative Assistant.
Outcomes & Benefits
Hilda interviewed well and FCI hired her. She began working in March 2010 at a 33 percent pay per hour increase over her previous job. Hilda performed well in her new job and when one of her colleagues left FCI, the company brought her on as a full-time employee and gave her a promotion with expanded duties and responsibilities. This new advancement included a second hourly salary increase. In early 2011, Hilda reported having received a third salary increase which boosts her total salary increase to more than 46% over that of her previous job. Hilda says, “When I started my tasks, they included more than just simple data entry. I needed to use my problem solving skills, business communication, and planning. From the onset, I exceeded expectations for my job performance. I have been at my job for less than six months and the work environment is great and all the staff have made it a pleasure to for FCI.”
