Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Pikes Peak Workforce Center
Workforce Challenge
Douglas came to the Pikes Peak Workforce Center in May of 2019 and met with one of our Young Adult Counselors. Douglas met the eligibility for the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act and began working actively with the PPWFC Young Adult team. The back story that Douglas brought with him to PPWFC is a history of working with the SWAP program and completing his Associate degree in IT at Pikes Peak Community College. He had completed a student internship with PPCC as IT support in their resource center.
Workforce Solution
With an understanding of this background and the interview feedback we were able to get from businesses Doug applied to we established a plan with his YA team. Douglas completed the Bring Your A-Game course and was accepted as the PPWFC’s first intern working with the IT Department at the Citizens Service Center. Doug gained valuable knowledge from the industry professional he worked with during these 4 months. During this time his SWAP support team partnered with the PPWFC YA team and job coach to continue helping him develop his job search skills, primarily his interview skills.
Outcomes & Benefits
When the internship ended in December 2019 Douglas worked with this professional network which now included the Business Relations team and the Colorado Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. Although there was a large network of people working with Douglas, it was his positive attitude and willingness to adjust with each application and interview that paid off in the end. Douglas’ hard work had him working through multiple hiring processes with local IT companies. As Douglas stated “When it Rains, it pours.” In February 2020 his efforts resulted in two job offers, and Doug opted for the IT Technician position with a local healthcare company. Thanks to Doug’s openness to feedback and willingness to apply lessons learned, we see continued success in his future.
