Workforce Challenge
Audrey Mobley was struggling to make ends meet. She has two young children, both of whom had medical problems, and the household was trying to survive on only her husband’s income. Even though Audrey was receiving Food Stamps and Medicaid she knew that she needed to find a job to help support her family. However she did not have any training or job skills and felt her only option was fast food restaurant work.
Workforce Solution
In August 2011, Audrey was accepted into the Medical Assisting Program at James Sprunt Community College. She was very excited but wasn’t sure how she would be able to complete her training without assistance. Audrey visited the Duplin County JobLink Career Center and learned that she was eligible for assistance with training as well as childcare from the Workforce Investment Act Program offered though James Sprunt Community College. She was able to complete her training without worry that her children would be taken care of.
Outcomes & Benefits
In May 2013, Audrey earned her Associate in Applied Science in Medical Assisting. She graduated with honors, was Class President and is now a three-time recipient of the Duplin County Works award. During Audrey’s training she was placed at Kinston Medical Specialists for her clinical rotation, and within two weeks of graduation she was offered a job. Audrey is now employed full time as a Hematology and Oncology Assistant. She stated that without WIA she would not have been able to attain her goals.
