Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Northeast Michigan Consortium Michigan Works!
Workforce Challenge
Alpena Grounds Services, Inc., has the very important job of maintaining the Alpena County Regional Airport, but they’ve struggled in the past with finding skilled employees to fill their open Maintenance Technician positions. Ideal candidates must be skilled in operating equipment, such as snow plows and loaders, as well as be able to conduct oil changes and minor repairs to equipment. Recently, Alpena Grounds Services came to Michigan Works! for help in finding a suitable candidate.
Workforce Solution
Working with Alpena Michigan Works! Business Services Professional, Jessica, Alpena Grounds Services not only received help with their job posting and resume collection, but also was able to secure On-the-Job Training (OJT) reimbursement. The OJT allowed them to hire someone with less experience than preferred and then train that new hire on exactly what was needed of them.
Outcomes & Benefits
Thanks to the OJT, Alpena Grounds Services now has a fully trained employee who is prepared to handle the necessary airport maintenance. Daniel, the newly trained employee, has received numerous marks of “excellent” on each time card and has proven, thus far, to be an excellent addition to their company.
