Community Challenge/Problem
Whether they have been out of the job market for a while or they have recently lost a long-term position, many job seekers face challenges in navigating a changed landscape for job searches. Challenges include learning to search for jobs on-line, updating a resume, and mastering interview skills.
Board Solution/Innovation
To address these concerns, President Sherry Kelley Marshall and SWORWIB Board Member Kimber Fender, Director of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, along with OMJ staff, finalized a joint project for a Work Readiness Series, which began in September 2016 at several library locations. The workshop series included “How to Create an OMJ Account,” a “Resume Workshop” and “Interview Prep,” which included mock interviews with recruiters from Fifth Third Bank and ended with “Business Etiquette.”
Paula Brehm-Heeger, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, stated, "The Library is thrilled to be working with OMJ to present high-quality, much-needed programs to individuals seeking employment and career opportunities. This fall's Work Readiness series was a great example of how we can work together to effectively serve our community. We look forward to many successful future collaborations!"
Outcomes & Results
The seven week program ended with a total of 90 participants, who attended at three separate library locations. In response to the overwhelming success of the library collaboration last fall, OhioMeansJobs will host a winter session titled “Breaking the Barriers” workshop series in three different libraries in the county beginning in February 2017.
