Workforce Challenge
Halima M. joined the Parents to Work program in June 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. This customer was unemployed and had a difficult time meeting her financial obligations, including child support payments. As a mother of 3, Halima wanted to become successful not only to improve her situation, but also to be able to provide for and set a good example for her children. She lacked experience and education to enter her dream career in the field of healthcare. Halima was in need of gaining new employment skills, obtaining a High School Equivalency diploma and improving her relationship skills.
Workforce Solution
Halima was eager to take advantage of the support offered by the Parents to Work program. She has attended the Resume workshop and attended a resume critique session with her Workforce Specialist to build a complete resume targeted to her dream career. Halima has also attended the Phone Interviews workshop to improve upon her presentation and interviewing skills. Those skills always posed a challenge to her and a virtual format of interviews (which became a new normal during the pandemic) was particularly difficult for her to navigate. Attending the workshop and practicing interviewing questions with her Workforce Specialist allowed Halima to feel more comfortable and confident in this setting. To address the gap in education preventing Halima from entering a career in healthcare industry, the customer was also offered GED assistance. She was provided a study book and pre-tests to assess her current skills and knowledge.
Outcomes & Benefits
Halima has also taken advantage of soft-skills workshops offered by the Parents to Work program which included: Relationship Skills Workshop and Motherhood class, which provided her not only with important knowledge and skills, but also provided an opportunity to bond with other mothers in the community, expanding her social support network. As a result of her hard work and assistance provided by the Parents to Work program, Halima has found employment at Angels
