Achieving Her Goal

Utah - Achieving Her Goal

Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Department of Workforce Services, Castle County

Workforce Challenge

"Jill"* was a single, 20 year old mother of a toddler. She came from a very unstable background, with a mother in prison and an alcoholic father. Not surprisingly, she had her own problems with substance abuse and had also been through the court system on drug charges. Jill had dropped out of high school but had somehow managed to obtain her GED. She was ready to make changes to improve her life and be a real mother to her child.

Workforce Solution

Jill had always been interested in a career in Cosmetology. Through Utah Department of Workforce Services, she was enrolled in the WIA Youth program. DWS supported her career choice and helped her identify a training provider so that she could pursue her goal.

During the training, Jill worked hard, always doing more than what was expected. Within 7 months her instructor started scheduling her to see customers. She was on her way!

Outcomes & Benefits

In February of 2009, Jill was spotlighted at a Youth Council meeting for her hard work and success. To date, she has obtained her state cosmetology license and full time employment. She has been drug free for 3 years. She gives credit to the WIA Youth program for giving her the opportunity and the support she needed to pull herself out of a negative lifestyle, change her focus, and stay drug free.
