Colorado Northwestern Community College

Community Challenge/Problem

Colorado Northwestern Community College was searching for a program which would assist students - particularly student athletes - in correctly choosing career pathways. At the time, the college was also working with the local Workforce Board in the Trade Adjustment Act/Colorado Online Energy Training Consortium (TAA-COETC) grant. The College requested assistance from workforce staff to gain access to an online assessment which could be accessed at any time and be used continuously.

Board Solution/Innovation

Rangely workforce staff consulted with the TAA-COETC Project Manager for review and approval of the career assessments and ability profiler available within the College in Colorado (CIC) website. After several discussion rounds, the assessments were added to the program guidance policy as appropriate assessments. The college and workforce staff coordinated student access during busy student and career counseling schedules and registered and reviewed results and other CIC features with the student athletes.

Outcomes & Results

Rangely workforce staff assisted 90 Student-Athletes in completion of the assessments on CIC. Students were referred to the TAA-COETC program and these referrals helped the Rural Resort/Northwestern regions meet their referral goals to the program. Colorado Northwestern Community College “loves” the College in Colorado website because it allows the career counselor and student access to the resource information about chosen career pathways and possible scholarship availability at any given time. The college also appreciates the efforts of workforce staff in collaborating with career counselors to access resources.
