Lake County Career Fair

Community Challenge/Problem

There is an ongoing challenge with how best to serve youth in rural areas and to give them the ability and knowledge to make informed decisions about career choices.

Board Solution/Innovation

Leadville Workforce Center, in partnership with Lake County School District and Leadville Lions Club, have created an annual event for youth from various communities in the area. Each year in April, they have held the Lake County Career Fair. Schools in Chaffee, Park, Eagle, and Lake counties are invited to attend and send students who are 14-19 years of age, including college freshman. Community and workforce staff volunteer to recruit presenters from diverse career pathways and students have an opportunity to choose the pathway they wish to investigate. Business & Public Administration, Agricultural & Natural Resources, Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Arts, Design, & Information Technology, Skilled Trades & Technical Sciences, Health Sciences & Public Safety, Hospitality, Human Services & Education are industries represented at the career fair. April 2014 was the 16th annual event, and this year there were 130 presenters representing 120 careers with a remarkable 550 students in attendance. Students are also given a scavenger hunt to complete to help them better engage with presenters which in turn promotes conversation, questions, and answers.

Outcomes & Results

The event is a resounding success for all involved. Community volunteers work together to organize the event and invite presenters from many areas and are able to work with different schools. Students are given an opportunity to really consider a variety of viable career choices while economic development is promoted by having so many people from outside the community visiting the area and opportunities to return for leisure time. Leadville Workforce Center and the Rural Resort Workforce Board are rewarded with the opportunity from the community to be part of the solution for youth and adult success in the labor market and economy.
