Manufacturing Career Road Trip series

Community Challenge/Problem

Recognizing a skills shortage in the manufacturing industry, Larimer County Workforce Center actively engages in a Manufacturing Sector Partnership to grow the local talent pipeline.

From this partnership effort, Poudre School District and LCWC created the Career Road Trip series to spark the interest of youth for work in various industries.

Board Solution/Innovation

On November 14, 2014, a Manufacturing Career Road Trip was held and was attended by over 60 youth from local area high schools. Two tours of local manufacturers were organized for youth to obtain a behind-the-scenes look at processes and procedures within these businesses. Professionals described to the youth what a typical career path would look like for a career in the manufacturing industry and what qualifications and education one must have to be successful.

Outcomes & Results

Students were highly engaged throughout the tours and presentations and provided very positive feedback about their experience and what they learned.

Student comments regarding the most valuable take aways included learning about injection molding, assembling parts, robotics, solid works and 3D printing; learning about available manufacturing careers and how to be successful as an up and coming engineer or machinist; and seeing how things are done in a large scale, high revenue business.
