Meet Maci-Lynn

Workforce Challenge

Maci-Lynn Smith was 14 years old when she entered the WIA-funded YWCA Focus Program. At that time, Maci-Lynn's goal was to study cosmetology; being in the youth program would help her stay on track in school and make progress towards her goal. Unfortunately, though, Maci-Lynn fell behind a grade level when she became pregnant.

Workforce Solution

Maci-Lynn continued her participation in the Focus program and was eligible for work experience hours. Although she enjoyed working, during the summer between what would have been her junior and senior years of high school, Maci-Lynn decided to forfeit some of her work experience hours to attend summer school so she could graduate on time.

Outcomes & Benefits

Maci completed her summer school schedule while maintaining a modified summer work schedule and was placed in her appropriate grade as a senior. The following June, Maci-Lynn graduated as expected and enrolled into Southeastern Community College for Cosmetology. She found employment at Opening Doors Day Care, and most recently started her second employment cleaning homes in the local community. She is a hard worker who is looking forward to continuing her studies in her field of choice.
