Workforce Challenge

Joyce Galarreta had her son when she was sixteen and was forced to drop out of regular school and attend an alternative school instead. At the same time, she was also caring for her ailing grandmother.

When Joyce first came to NOVA she was enduring another round of hardships. Her grandmother had recently passed away and her twin sister died at age nineteen, two weeks after giving birth. Joyce stepped up and started raising her sister's daughter.

Despite these personal challenges, Joyce still had the desire and drive to obtain education and a job that would provide income for herself and her children.

Workforce Solution

Joyce worked with an advisor at the NOVA youth office to make plans for a career and for continuing her education. Through NOVA services, Joyce was able to gain work experience at the Department of Motor Vehicles and attend computer classes which aided her pursuit of higher education at Heald College. Joyce received bus passes, career counseling, and emotional support to help her continue on her path toward her long term goal to be a juvenile probation officer.

Outcomes & Benefits

Joyce has continued to focus on her schooling and recently graduated from Heald College, earning Associate's degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Criminal Justice. Joyce has demonstrated great personal strength, determination and willpower to achieve her goals. She says that the NOVA program was “more than what I expected." Joyce plans to transfer to San Jose State University with her new knowledge and skills to continue her educational pursuit and personal growth.
