Meet Delaina

Workforce Challenge

Delaina was a single parent with two boys to support. She was receiving food stamps and looking for work while she took classes towards a degree in nursing. To pay for the classes and help with her living expenses, she took out several student loans. This and child support were her only sources of income.

Once she was fully accepted into the nursing program at Northwest Arkansas Community College, she knew that she had to seek assistance to be able to complete her degree. Delaina had heard about the Workforce Investment Act in a presentation that was given to the prospective nursing students at the college, so she visited the Arkansas Workforce Center at Rogers.

Workforce Solution

The Northwest Arkansas Certified Development Company, located at the Arkansas Workforce Center at Rogers advised Delaina of its services, and provided tuition assistance and some supportive services. Delaina began attending college full time, and quickly advanced towards her degree. “I would’ve never gotten through school without the help I received from WIA," said Delaina. “It’s priceless to someone in need”.

Outcomes & Benefits

Delaina has now received her Registered Nurses’ License. She is employed at a large area hospital making $18.75 per hour plus a differential amount for night and weekend shifts. Her life is much more stable; she was able to purchase a home and provide for her family without having to rely on the help from others or the government.
