Meet Steven

Workforce Challenge

Steven Gould came to the Salem County One Stop in November 2007. He was working as a forklift operator at a pool supplier, but his hours had been cut to part time when business slowed down during the off season. Steven was interested in getting his Commercial Drivers License (CDL), but because he was a father with two children to support, he stayed with the employer part time, hoping to find a solution that would allow him to attend the necessary classes for his CDL and pass the licensing exam.

Workforce Solution

Because Steven effectively had experienced a lay-off by going from full time to part time work, he qualified for WIA assistance as a dislocated worker. Through WIA, he would be able to access funding for tuition to pay for the CDL course. In June 2008, Steven enrolled in the weekend classes at Smith & Soloman to get his CDL license while still working part time. Steven's dedication to the program and his goal to better himself for his family motivated him to complete the course on time. He graduated on August 20, 2008.

Outcomes & Benefits

In October 2008, shortly after he completed the CDL course, he was hired full time by SJ Transportation, a local company in Woodstown, NJ. He is proud of achieving his goal.
