Meet Lernell

Workforce Challenge

Unemployed, single mother Lernell found herself struggling to provide for her daughter. December 2007 was especially hard on Lernell; there were bills to pay and she struggled just to pay for the essentials for the two of them. Although times were rough, Lernell knew she had to be a good role model for her daughter.

Workforce Solution

At the Cumberland County One Stop Career Center Lernell received career assistance and information about educational programs for which WIA funding was available. Lernell decided to pursue training as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She enrolled in the LPN program at Cumberland County Technical Education Center. Although it was difficult, Lernell persevered, networked, and took advantage of every opportunity to get ahead.

Outcomes & Benefits

Lernell's perseverance paid off when she graduated in August 2008. Within that same year, she was hired by South Jersey Extended Care in Bridgeton. Since then, Lernell continues to be a valued employee, working double shifts when needed, and providing better financial stability for herself and her daughter.
