Meet Mileidy

Workforce Challenge

Mileidy left high school at 16 to care for her baby. She ended up working various jobs and receiving public assistance. By age 20, she had two additional children to care for, and no education. Although her boyfriend encouraged her to go back to school, Mileidy struggled with the decision to do so.

Workforce Solution

In 2004, Mileidy decided to move forward, and joined the New Jersey Youth Corps program. In addition to the academic instruction Mileidy needed to prepare for the GED test, the NJYC program provided her work readiness, career planning, and work experience opportunities. Through the help of the staff she was able to obtain her GED and upon graduation, secured a part-time Teller position with the Newfield National Bank.

Outcomes & Benefits

Over the next five years, Meleidy advanced in her job, first to full-time teller, then to head teller, and now she is the Assistant Branch Manager of the bank. She also has four children but no longer requires public assistance. Meleidy plans to attend college once her youngest is five, and ultimately wants to pursue a career in Criminal Justice.
