Meet Jess

Workforce Challenge

Jess was attending Arkansas Tech University and was in the Emergency Administration and Management program. He was working part time but was not assigned many hours, and the employer was contemplating closing the business. Jess lived and worked in a rural area and had to drive over 80 miles each day to attend school. Hoping to avoid more student loans, Jess came into the Arkansas Workforce Center for help finding better employment.

Workforce Solution

At the Center, Jess received an evaluation and an eligibility assessment for the WIA program. Because of the scarcity of employment in his area, among other factors, Jess was approved for services under WIA: it would pay his tuition, books, and fees for his remaining two semesters of school. ARRA funds were used to pay supportive services such as transportation assistance.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jess graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Administration and Management in 2010. He immediately went to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who encouraged him to return to school the following semester for his Master’s degree. He is now attending school and working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
