Workforce Challenge

Mark was laid off from his job in a car detailing shop. On his own, he researched career options and decided that he wanted to pursue commercial truck driving, which required coursework and a certification test, after which he'd receive a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). The training, however, cost $4,000, an amount that seemed impossible given his financial situation.

Workforce Solution

Mark researched obtaining a loan for the training, but then a friend advised him to go to the One Stop Center at The Job Council. "I went there and went through workshops and classes and met with an Employment Specialist," said Mark. "I followed through on all program requirements and obtained tuition assistance to attend the IITR Truck Driving School in Medford."

After working as a commercial driver for six years, Mark was laid off again and received unemployment benefits while he searched for a new job. When he found one, the employer required a HAZMAT endorsement, a renewal of his CDL, a medical card, and a background check, all to be provided by Mark at his own expense. He returned to the One Stop Center at The Job Council, and again, with WIA assistance, received funds to pay for these items.

Outcomes & Benefits

With the necessary credentials in hand, Mark was hired for the job. "I am back to work now," said Mark. "Thanks for the help when I needed it most."
