Workforce Challenge

Patrick O'Malley was laid off from his long-term position in the floundering construction industry. He had no job prospects and felt uncertain about his future. Patrick knew he needed to build new skills and select a career that was in higher demand to provide more stability.

Workforce Solution

Patrick sought help from his local one stop career center, WorkSource-Whatcom County. Patrick met with WorkSource staff to develop a career plan in Process Technology, and create a financial plan to get through the rigorous training. With a WIA dislocated worker occupational training scholarship, and career guidance from his WIA coordinator, Patrick enrolled at Bellingham Technical College. He quickly became a top student and active in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Outcomes & Benefits

Following a coveted 10 week internship at ConocoPhillips Refinery in Ferndale, WA, Patrick was offered a position with the company, and now makes nearly $32/hour, far more than he did in his now non-existent construction job. Patrick anticipates completing his Associate of Science degree in Process Technology in 2011.

“I got the job of my dreams” says Patrick, “and I couldn’t have imagined it possible without all the help I got from WorkSource.”
