Meet Michelle

Workforce Challenge

Michelle's hours were cut from full-time to part-time while working at a non-profit social services agency in Sauk County. She struggled to pay her bills and could not find full-time employment with her existing skill set. She realized that she needed more specialized job skills and work experience to help her find her next job and to financially support herself.

Workforce Solution

After a visit to her local Job Center, Michelle was referred to the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program. The WIA staff helped her identify potential career paths and training opportunities available in South Central Wisconsin. Michelle qualified for the Opportunity Grant program, which is designed to help individuals improve their skills, earn a certificate, diploma or degree at a technical college and pursue career pathways to better jobs in high-demand occupations.

The Opportunity Grant helped offset up to $1,200 in costs for Michelle’s tuition, books, and travel as she completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program at Madison College in just a few months time.

Outcomes & Benefits

Michelle’s job situation is looking up now that she has earned her certification and training as a Certified Nursing Assistant. After completing her coursework at Madison College, she received over 30 job offers and has accepted a full time position at Maplewood Nursing Home of Sauk Prairie. The pay for a nursing aide position in Sauk County area ranges from $10.62 to $13.78 based on experience.
