Workforce Challenge

At age 20, Kendra was a high school graduate and a single mother of a newborn son. She had no work experience and for several years she struggled to find employment. She came to the Arkansas Workforce Center when she learned of WIA’s Youth Employment Services (YES). Kendra was anxious to enroll in the program and receive work readiness skills.

Workforce Solution

Kendra was enrolled into the Yes Program where she obtained valuable skills through work experience. She was placed at a prosthetics lab, where she gained clerical skills, including transcription. She was surrounded by people who modeled a positive work ethic and Kendra also acquired soft skills that are so important in the work place.

While in the program she also attended work readiness workshops. The worksite required employees to wear scrubs, which Kendra could not afford to purchase. The Yes Program, through supportive services, purchased scrubs for her and paid childcare for her infant son. Kendra would not have been able to participate in work experience without the supportive services she received.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kendra excelled in this positive work environment and gained not only skills needed for the work place but also self confidence. Her supervisor stated, “She was eager to learn and her performance exceeded my expectations.” Upon exit from the YES program, Kendra was hired by the prosthetics lab, where she now works as a transcriptionist.

“This program has guided me to great opportunities and I have a positive outlook on becoming a productive adult," said Kendra. "I don’t know what I would have done without this program.”
