Meet Shailynne

Workforce Challenge

Shailynne was 25 years old, recently married, and she had just been accepted into the Physician Assistant Program at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. Her husband was in college working on a law degree and they had been living on PELL grants and loans. Shailynne had been working a temporary job to try to meet financial obligations. In order for her to attend the Physician Assistant program, she would need help.

Workforce Solution

Shailynne contacted Workforce Oklahoma in January, 2009 for assistance with her dream. Workforce Oklahoma was able to help her with some of the school costs that weren't covered by her Pell grant. During the program, Shai took classes like Clinical Medicine II, Pharmocotherpautics, Pathophysiology, and Radiology. She was an excellent student, going to school from 8am until 5pm and doing two to three hours of home work each night. Workforce Oklahoma helped with the cost of her tuition, books, and uniforms. Upon completion of training, Workforce Oklahoma helped get her Physician Assistant license, too.

Outcomes & Benefits

Shailynne recently completed the program with excellent grades, and she has gone to work with Dr. Brian Snell at the Neuroscience Institute. She is very grateful for the assistance she was able to receive through the Workforce Investment Act. She is looking forward to a successful future in a challenging and high demand occupation.
