Meet Levi

Workforce Challenge

Levi is a high school student attending a rural school in northern Arkansas. Levi comes from a a family that has been through many difficult situations during his life. He has struggled in school and has had a run-in with the law which resulted in community service.

Workforce Solution

In the spring of 2010, Levi filled out an application for the WIA Summer Youth Program being offered through the Arkansas Workforce Center at Mountain Home. Through the program Levi was placed in a maintenance position at a local school. He received positive mentoring from his supervisors at work and also from his WIA case manager. Levi attended job clubs and leadership workshops to learn skills that would help him in the world of work. The training focused on work ethics, leadership, communication and many other skills employers seek. In addition, his supervisors and case manager referred him to after-school tutoring and stressed the importance of getting an education.

Outcomes & Benefits

According to the maintenance supervisor, Levi has shown all-around improvement since starting the Youth Program. He has stayed out of trouble and as a result was selected to work on the Year Round Youth Program. In addition, he has continued to participate in after-school tutoring and his grades have steadily improved. Levi has turned out to be a real asset to the maintenance department at his school and is on the path to a successful future.
