Workforce Challenge

Jessica wanted steady employment and a good life for her newborn son. She got a part-time job at Hartford Hospital, and she applied for a 2nd job there as well. As a high school graduate, she wanted to attend college, but full time work was a priority.

Workforce Solution

Then, Jessica learned about the hospital’s onsite college preparatory and for-credit program, Y.E.S.: Your Educational Success. ”I knew I wanted more out of life. I wanted a better job and an education. I wanted to be the best person I could be. I thought this might be the way to get started. “

Jessica enrolled in the Y.E.S. incumbent worker training program that was launched with WIA funding through Capital Workforce Partners, North Central Connecticut’s Workforce Investment Board.

“I really got a lot out of the grammar sections. I always struggled with grammar in high school. It seemed like I would never understand commas and how to write. Before Y.E.S., grammar was really confusing.”

After the initial Y.E.S courses, this first-generation high school graduate completed her first college class onsite at the hospital. “I feel good that I pushed myself and utilized all the opportunities available to me. I overcame extreme difficulties and completed my first college course with an A.”

Outcomes & Benefits

“I have a new fulltime office position. I am now in my second college semester and moving forward. But, the fact that I am teaching my son, by example, is what means the most to me,” said Jessica.

After Y.E.S time and money management training, Jessica said “I defined my current goals and then followed through on them. I was able to purchase my first car without going into major debt. I see the bigger picture in life. I feel like nothing can stop me."
