Arkansas Workforce Center - Fayetteville

Meet Gaylynn

Workforce Challenge

When Gaylynn was laid off from an equipment leasing company after a year of service, she was uncertain of her next steps. She had bookkeeping experience but held no degree to back up her skills. Her unemployment was scheduled to end and the only other source of income would be her husband’s disability payment.

Gaylynn wanted to return to school and obtain an accounting credential. She felt this would create stability in her next job and help her avoid being laid off again. She applied for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and various scholarships, but because of her status as a dislocated worker, these took longer to process.

Workforce Solution

Gaylynn came into the Workforce Center in Fayetteville, where she completed an interests profile to help identify career options that aligned with her natural aptitudes and interests, and saw that one of her results was the legal field. Intrigued, Gaylynn quickly researched admissions requirements for the Paralegal program and enrolled at the community college.

Arkansas Workforce provided a scholarship for Gaylynn; this award would allow her to use some of her FAFSA funding for living expenses once it was approved, and allow her to continue school even after her unemployment benefits ended.

Outcomes & Benefits

Gaylynn is now in her last semester at the community college. She has an internship at the Legal Aid office and is completing cases that most individuals would not do until 2 years into their degree. She is a conscientious employee who is committed to her work, even taking work home to complete on days when school is not in session. She already has several job prospects waiting for her to graduate, and her financial burden has been eased as a result of the services she received through WIA and Arkansas Workforce Center Fayetteville. Good luck, Gaylynn!
