Meet Jamie

Workforce Challenge

Jamie worked in her uncle’s tobacco fields in 2007 and enrolled in the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP)/WIA Adult program to get much-needed assistance with the rising costs of education.
She wanted to become a nurse but lacked the financial means to do so without assistance.

Workforce Solution

Following enrollment through WIA, Jamie began to attend Southeastern Community College's nursing program. Jamie worked hard and remained committed to her nursing goal even though she had to assist her mother with various medical appointments due to illness.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jamie graduated in May 2010 from Southeastern Community College with a degree in Nursing. During that semester, she earned a class average of 93% thus achieving exempt status for the final exam. Jamie went on to successfully complete the NC Board of Nursing State Exam for Registered Nurse. During this time she was also taking care of her mother, who was undergoing treatment for cancer at Duke Medical Center.

Jamie is now working as a Registered Nurse for Liberty Commons Nursing Home in Whiteville, NC, earning $20 per hour while still continuing to care for her mother.
