Workforce Challenge

Devin, who lives with his grandmother, dropped out of high school during his tenth-grade year and became a father at a very young age. He worked several odd jobs but knew that he ultimately wanted a career as a welder, which he believed would provide the income needed to support his child. Devin came to the Columbus County JobLink Career Center as a 21-year-old seeking employment, but after counseling and career guidance, he discovered that he needed to complete his GED to be more competitive in the workforce.

Workforce Solution

Devin enrolled in the WIA Keys 2 Success Youth Program in the summer of 2009 and promptly enrolled in the GED program at Southeastern Community College. While working on his GED, he also completed several continuing education courses in welding, basic duct work and basic electricity for HVAC.

At the same time, Devin also participated in WIA funded work experience at the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs where he further developed his carpentry and maintenance skills. Devin received outstanding marks on his evaluations and positive verbal statements about his excellent work. Since Devin did not have transportation, his aunt made sure he got to class and work. On the days when she was not available, he walked to his work site and found rides to class. This showed his level of commitment to completing his work experience and course work.

In November 2009, Devin completed his GED and enrolled for Spring 2010 at Southeastern Community College in the 2-year Welding Technology Associates Degree program. The WIA Keys 2
Success Youth Program provided tuition and book assistance to help him meet this goal.

Outcomes & Benefits

Although college has been challenging, Devin continues to receive encouragement from the staff at Columbus County JobLink, and he expects to graduate in December, 2011. Devin is grateful for the WIA Keys 2 Success Program for affording him the opportunity to attend college and obtain work experience which will help him achieve his goals.
