Meet Randall

Workforce Challenge

Randall was laid off from his position as a painter in 2008. Due to the local economy (particularly the construction industry), Randall was unable to find work and eventually exhausted his unemployment benefits. The local labor market did not provide him with any opportunities, and he had limited experiences in anything other than construction.

Workforce Solution

Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC), WorkSource Bend, supported Randall for some time with job search assistance, and he worked one-on-one with an employment counselor to pursue other avenues of employment. He also utilized the resume workshops and upgraded his skills with computer workshops. When Randall was unable to find any type of employment, he decided to retrain as a truck driver. Randall received assistance with tuition via OWA/COIC to complete the training program and earn his Commercial Drivers License certification.

Outcomes & Benefits

In 2010, Randall earned his CDL certification and was immediately employed by a long-haul trucking company making $15/hour. He has remained employed on a full-time basis since that time.
