Meet Mary

Workforce Challenge

In January, 2010, Mary was laid off from a local aviation firm where she worked as a mechanical designer. Because the local labor market is very limited for the aviation industry, Mary had little luck job searching. She did not have any professional certifications in her field, which limited her job search and had actually contributed to her layoff, as many of her co-workers with certifications or degrees in the field had been retained. To continue as a mechanical designer, she needed specialized training.

Workforce Solution

Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (COIC), WorkSource Bend, supported Mary with job search assistance, and also with funding for retraining via Oregon Workforce Alliance. Mary received assistance with tuition and supplies to complete the Manufacturing Technology program at Central Oregon Community College.

Outcomes & Benefits

In January 2011, Mary became re-employed with a local aviation company as a mechanical designer. The additional training she received (with assistance from OWA/COIC) assisted her in getting a job, as she can now pair her previous work experience with education. Mary finished her Manufacturing Technology certificate in March 2011. She said that she is one of few women in the program (or in that industry) and the only woman in her age bracket. She is currently working full time.
