Meet Mark

Workforce Challenge

Mark was a laid off construction laborer. He was unable to find employment because of several barriers, including a lack of marketable skills, a criminal history, and lack of computer skills needed for job searching, resume preparation, and online applications. Mark was interested in pursuing a career as a heavy equipment operator and came into the Workforce Center seeking tuition assistance for the training he needed to become certified.

Workforce Solution

WIA funds helped Mark obtain training as a heavy equipment operator; however, during his job search after the course, he discovered that most heavy equipment operator jobs also required a Commercial Driver’s License. Again, Mark received WIA assistance to acquire this license. With training completed, Mark still had to overcome his other barriers to employment which included having a felony conviction. This is where the resource area of the Workforce Center came into play. The resource area worked with Mark to learn effective ways to address his past with prospective employers. They also offered resume assistance, mock interviews, and assistance with online job searches and applications.

Outcomes & Benefits

With the help of these WIA services, Mark is now employed with a construction company as an equipment operator and driver. Mark stated, “Without the help of the Workforce Center and the WIA scholarship program I would still be struggling to find steady employment that allows me to financially support my family. Not only did the assistance I received put me in a better financial position, but the emotional support and encouragement I received from the staff restored my confidence in myself.”
